Fire Occurence At Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Nigeria.

The fuel station of the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, caught flame at about 7.40am, in the wee hours of wednesday. Passers-by said they detected thick smoke billowing from the station and instantly notified firefighters, who immediately came to the location to quench the inferno it raged for close to 30 minutes. It was learnt that two staffs were injured while attempting to prevent the fire from moving to other parts of the fuel station. Attempts to inform airport officials were futile, nevertheless an aviation security personnel, who was not mandated to have a word with the press, established the occurence.

The Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport ranks as the oldest in Nigeria, with the activities kick-starting in the year 1936. In the first decades of service, it became an vital fuel stop for airlines flying long-haul services between Europe and Africa. Due to the fact that newer aircrafts no longer needed such fuel stops and, with the downturn of the Kano economy in the late 20th century, many international airlines stopped patronising the airport. Till they finally indefinitely suspended service in June 2012, KLM served as the lone European airline serving Kano, they have succeeded in doing this without interruption ever since 1947. This dubs KLM the longest-serving foreign airline in Nigeria.

The number of international flights cater to the large Lebanese community in Kano and Muslim religious journey to Mecca.

The airport has both an international and domestic terminal. Building began on a new domestic terminal and was brought to light on 23 May 2011. In 2009, the airport had conveyed 323,482 passengers.
